Southwest Roadracing Association
Under Construction
The Southwest Roadracing Association has its roots in the middle 1980’s as a
small club promoting road race karting in Texas. Today SWRA has grown from
approximately 50 members to over 350 members. Races have 180 to 250 entries
per event in 31 different classes. This makes SWRA the largest road race
organization in the in IKF. With 1400 to 1800 plus entries a year, it is
more than the other regions combined. Track venues include Motorsport Ranch,
Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, No Problem Raceway, with the home track being
Oak Hill Raceway. New venues are also searched for.
SWRA’s financial goal is to have funds available at the end of the year to
pay next season initial fees, have reasonable operating funds, and return as
much as possible in year-end awards to the participants. The year-end awards
are distributed based on points earned throughout the season in each class.
Generally approximately $10,000 is awarded.
The International Kart Federation, the oldest kart racing sanctioning body,
is the governing body under which SWRA conducts its races. Under IKF
sanction, SWRA is provided a stable set of rules used nationwide, not only
for class structure, but for conduct of events and series.
Most importantly, due to IKF’s size, they are able to provide an excellent
insurance package that SWRA uses at each event. A $5,000,000 liability
policy, along with a $5,000,000 E&O policy covers every event. There is also
various personal injury, damages, etc. included in the policy. The policy is
underwritten by American Specialty Insurance Services, Inc., an “A” rated
company. Anyone on the premises must sign a waver and have a pit pass to be
insured. . On site ambulance service is required at all events.
How does a race weekend go?
On a typical two-day weekend event, participants will arrive on Friday, with
Friday practice available at some tracks. All the necessary registration
paperwork and pre-tech inspection is taken care of prior to being allowed on
the track. A novice school is held Friday night for new drivers, with a
dedicated practice session Saturday.
Practice runs until 10:30 with races beginning at 10:45. Races are run in
two different formats. The shifter and Tag classes (our most popular) run
two 20-minute heats with a cumulative point system determining finishing
position. The clutch classes run one 30-minute race. One 45-minute race is
held each day for the traditional laydown style road race karts. Eleven
races a day keeps the SWRA support staff busy.
The best thing about SWRA? Our people. Come race with us and you will find
out why. |
